We take a couple mellow warm up / orientation runs each day. This is one of the keys to not getting hurt. You learn what jumps/trails are expert, what jumps/trails are beginner, how to be aware of hazards, what other riders are doing, etc, and we learn your riding level. The first day of camp can be the most dangerous, as you're super excited to ride the park and you will see some of the things you have seen in videos, so it's super important for you to take it easy on the first day. Our coaches help you learn, stay safe and have fun - a great combination.
Coaching Makes The Bike Park Safer
In our 24 years of camp we have spent our fair share of time chilling at the hospital with injured campers. Ken, the camp director who chills at the hospital with the injured campers, actually met Michelle, his wife who's a registered nurse, taking an injured camper to the hospital. One thing Ken noticed, other than his soon to be wife, was how many people came in to the hospital injured from riding the Bike Park without a coach or armour. Riders without someone to say... "Ahhh No man, you aren't ready for that" or "Try this line it's better suited to your ability." Having an awesome Coach to Camper ratio makes COC and the bike park safer. When we started Bike Camp the first thing we thought of is by having the best coach camper ratio and telling everyone to wear armour, our injuries would be lower and everyone would get to ride more, including our designated hospital chiller, Camp Director Ken.
Full Armor Saves Your Session
You are at camp to learn to ride better. Learning means crashing sometimes. With the full body armor and full face helmet you can crash more often without paying the toll as bad. You can get hurt mountain biking at the park so we enforce this mandatory safety equipment as a way to get the most out of your camp while staying as safe as possible. If you don't have your own armour you can rent it in town when you arrive (for an additional cost). If you have doubts about armour, just ask Tyler how it saved his week.
If You Get Injured
Should you get injured while at camp, Whistler has a medical center that can deal with anything that happens. The bike park has bike patrols that take care of people when they get injured, transporting them down the mountain to the clinic as needed.
