What if my kid is really shy?

Don't worry. We can spot these kids a mile away, and they are never left out. The first night they arrive they meet their coach and the small, un-intimidating group he/she will be riding with. If the shy camper is trying to hide in their room we know about it. Campers get up for breakfast and get their lift pass for that day. We know exactly who hasn't turned up that morning, so we go to their room to check it out.

If you talk to your child and he is feeling lonely or shy or has any problems, please call Ken Achenbach the Camp Director so he can get your kid sorted so that they are having a blast like everyone else. Don’t wait till the last day to tell us. Please tell us right away so we can do something about it.

One thing that we do suggest is friend us up on our Camp of Champions Facebook Profile and or our Camp of Champions Pinkbike Profile to meet and start making friends with other campers before you even arrive. We get so many campers that had no one specified as a room mate when they sign up and then by the time camp rolls around have a posse of 5 friends they want to room with thanks to Facebook and Pinkbike. Who knows you may be flying together with your new friends. Once you get here you will be meeting your online friends and you'll have fun and forget about being shy right from the get go.

The majority of the campers come on their own, so they're all making new friends right off the bat. We make great efforts to ensure the shy camper is included in the afternoon activities too. By the time their camp session is over, you wouldn't believe it was the same shy kid, just a few days ago. We get some many calls every year from parents that are so happy with their "Used to be shy, now outgoing" kid that came home from camp. If you've still got concerns please contact us to discuss further.

If your camper was going to be coming with a friend and the friend backed out, don't let their cancellation change your plans just because you are apprehensive about your child coming on their own. Sometimes "on your own" is the best way to come to camp. You are forced to go out of your way to make new friends instead of being in a safe little friendship cocoon with the person you came with.

Camp is filled with 250 to 300 people that are just as excited about on snowboarding, skiing and mountain biking as your child. This gives your child and all the other campers the instant common ground to establish new friendships. Everyone is just as worried about making friends at camp and it makes it so everyone goes out of their way to be nice and make new friends. It's one of Ken, the Camp Director's favorite things about camp. People making friends from all over the world. It's half teh reason he launched the ESL so you never know where your roommate/new best friend might be from. Hi other favorite is putting campers with the same name together. Nothing like a room full of Josh's or Emma's to make everything fun right off the bat.

How are the campers supervised?

Please be aware our camp is NOT a 24 hour fully chaperoned, "hold their hand" camp. The youngest age we accept is 12. We allow the kids into the village of Whistler (approx 4 square blocks) on their own or with their new buddies. This is never a problem due to the fact that Whistler is such a beautiful, safe and compact resort. We have our own by-laws up here, if you swear or use profanity loud enough, you can be arrested! That gives you an idea of what it's like in Whistler village. Most of Whistler village is car free, designed for pedestrians. The village is like a big outdoor shopping mall nestled in the mountains. We allow campers to roam around the village on their own unsupervised (until curfew), because it's such a safe and compact resort.

This is the Camp of Champions, not the Camp of Party Animals. Ken Achenbach, the Camp Director, lives in The Dorm, supervising the campers, along with other members of staff. Our close, but unimposing supervision lets everyone have a great time and stay out of trouble. We treat the kids with the respect they want, and 99 times out of 100 we get it back.

If you are under 19, our four rules for camp are no drugs, no alcohol, no disruptive behavior and you must be in the hotel by curfew, 10:00PM. Break these rules you go home that day or sooner, with no refund whatsoever. If you felt like you were an adult and broke these rules, we will also treat you like an adult and drive you to the airport to arrange your flight home. We give you one of our cell phones to phone your parents and tell them why you are on your way home. The camper will be responsible for all costs incurred by being sent home.

If you are over 19, the same rules and regulations of "No drugs" apply. Being 19 yrs or older, you are classed as "an adult" in Canada and we treat you as such. If you are 19 yrs or older the curfew does NOT apply and you are legally allowed to drink in Canada.

However, if you decide to go out at night we ask that you do not return to The Dorm in a noticeable or disruptive fashion. This means you cannot let any of the under age campers see you drunk or with alcohol at anytime. If you have been drinking at a bar in town you must return directly to your room upon returning to the hotel. We do not want any under age campers exposed to bad influences and we appreciate your help in keeping alcohol out of their sight.

The "No drugs" rule still applies of course, regardless of your age, as it is illegal and the police will be involved if you are caught with illegal substances. If you cannot follow these simple guidelines then you will be asked to leave the camp immediately with no refund or assistance in getting back home. We have a zero tolerance on bad influences at camp. We promise every camper's parents that this is a safe environment. If you are the person that makes us break that promise even for one minute, you will go home. Period.

These are our only cast in stone rules at COC. Don't break them and you will have the time of your life. There isn’t another camp on earth like COC.

What happens if my kid gets hurt?
What happens when someone gets hurt?

Please note, we DO NOT offer any form of medical insurance. We strongly recommend that you organize some sort of medical coverage before the camper arrives. Please make sure it covers downhill mountain biking and snow related sports.

If there is an accident, like a broken arm for instance, Whistler Mountain has a professional bike patrol dedicated to the bike park.Blackcomb Mountain has professional ski patrol dedicated to our camp facility. They will immediately attend any incident along with one or more of our coaching staff. The injured party will then be safely transported off the mountain to the hospital in the village. They will receive the best medical care, in a state-of- the-art hospital.

In the case of doctor or hospital visit, payment is required at the hospital or doctor's office at time of visit if you are from outside Canada. They only accept credit card or cash payment immediately after any treatment, then you can claim back that cost from your medical insurance company back home.

We have a helicopter on call, at all times, in case of serious injury.

We pride ourselves on our level of care when a camper is injured. It's the reason your registration is not considered confirmed until we receive your waiver. The last thing we want is the camper having any kind of delay in treatment. The waiver ensures that the camper will receive prompt medical attention. There is nothing worse than being in pain and not being able to see the doctor because the hospital doesn't have your medical information at hand.

If you cannot ride due to injury, we encourage you to stay and enjoy camp anyway.

If you are injured and must return home, if you have included "Injury Insurance" with your registration, you will receive a partial refund of $150 per day for every day of your session you miss after you leave our care.

What if I am coming to camp by myself?

Don't worry if you are coming to camp by yourself. Coming to camp with friends is fun but we think you have even more fun coming to camp on your own. Because everyone who comes to camp is so stoked on snowboarding, skiing or mountain biking, making friends is easy. Usually everyone has about 5 new friends by the time they get off the bus from the airport. We have to change our rooming list countless times a summer just because someone made new friends on the bus and now wants to room with them. If you are worried about "Billy" being the only kid from your area coming to camp, drop us a line as we have campers coming from everywhere and chances are we have someone coming from your area that he or she can travel together with. You might even be on the same flight.

One thing that we do suggest is friend us up on our Camp of Champions Facebook Profile and or our Camp of Champions Pinkbike Profile to meet and start making friends with other campers before you even arrive. It's amazing how fast people make friends at camp. Since 80% of our campers come on their own, everyone is sort of nervous about being on their own and it tears down a lot of walls and makes campers come out of their shells and say "Hi" to people. It also lets you be anyone you want to be.

By the time they leave camp you have made friends for life.
